Old standalones on recent versions of Linux

Recently I updated my school computers from some ancient Ubuntu distro to Xubuntu 14.04
and noticed that all the text fields in my standalones started showing size 9 fonts rather than the size 32 I need
for Primary age kids.
Oddly enough, the solution involves "just" going back to the source stacks and building new standalones
on any post 13.10 Linux distro: no other changes needed.
