How can we download this? I tried to download it from my account and was brought to a page thanking me for signing up to the mailing list, but no download.

This is probably because no downloads of LiveCode are available: LiveCode is only available once you have paid for the Beta version of Create:

This isn't actually accurate info.

If you have a current licence for LiveCode "standard" (or "classic"), then you can sign into your account under the "more" menu option on the website. Under the Products section you will see your licensed versions of Classic.
Use the drop-down to scroll through to the -rc and -dp versions lower in the list. Select, and choose the appropriate installer for the desired platform.

This is what I see when I go to the license section. Clicking on the download button just forwards me to a page thanking me for joining the mailing list.

Well I read the FAQ and it seems like Livecode is not the platform for me :(

Ah, well without a paid up licence, I think the -rc and -dp releases won't be available, and of course the current release is time limited only for the trial period. It's a bugbear, and a shame because I recall your previous prolific and valuable contributions, especially with databases.

I had come up with some stuff I wanted to write in Livecode, but seeing as there is such a barrier to getting it, I will have to use something else. :(

Sadly, LC is not what it used to be and LC Create, which is now what has officially replaced LC, is a a long way off being able to offer what LC once did. It might do some day, but I suspect by then the magic may have gone sadly.
For the time being, LC 10 equivalent is being packaged with LCC, but that's behind a paywall - but for free apps, that paywall is relatively low.
Price increases and loss of free/cheap seats are affecting all commercial platforms which I guess is to be expected in this day and age.

The only free options would be stuff that is entirely free now. There are some free things out there, Richmond has pointed out Webtalk for example, which is a browser based xTalk, and there are some efforts to maintain the opensource version of LC.

For object-oriented Basic: Xojo has dropped its low-cost tier and almost doubled licence costs; B4X remains a free platform that does desktop/mobile pretty well but sadly the IDE is windows based only (but easily crates macOS/iOS/android apps directly from the windows IDE).

Then there are many other options but little in the way of proper cross-platform development, mainly B4X, Flutter/Dart and Python.

Out of curiosity, what langueage/platform are you planning to use?

The open source continuation version is alive and kicking, and there is an ARM Mac version in beta.

I have an old license for Xojo (which still works) so might just use that. I was totally stoked about using Livecode as it seems to be easier to code in, but that is now a pipe-dream. I would try Livecode Create, but it's not available and the fact that your compiled applications stop working if you stop your license is a total deal breaker for me.

A little less cryptic a comment.

Stam, what do you mean by:
Sadly, LC is not what it used to be and LC Create, which is now what has officially replaced LC, is a a long way off being able to offer what LC once did.
I thought Create was a new paradigm that would replace good ol' LC. To me, that is concerning because I am not likely to embrace Create unless it can magically do much of the work that I do now, which I do not believe. But is that what you meant, simply, that standard LC development would someday soon cease? If so, then I understand, but it ain't dead yet.

But is it possible that the forward motion of LC will cease, or be so diverted as to mummify its core capabilities and reach? In other words, will it be dumbed down in favor of ease-of-use at the expense of simple power? And is this ease-of-use a sales come-on?

I have never once, even for my largest project (a mainstack with eight subStacks and 23,000 lines of code), made a flowchart. I only make custom gadgetry; no databases, accessing the internet in either direction, audio/video, animation, whatever.

Everything I have ever built with HC or LC has involved the following steps.

1- Imagine what I want.
2- Drag controls from the tools palette and configure them here and there on the card.
3- Start coding.
4- Test, curse, continue.

Lots of back and forth, profanity, angst, frustration and ultimately triumph.

About Create:

- I still need to be here for #1,
- I cannot see at all how it will do #2
- I can see how it might be a powerful aide, but no more than that, for #3.
- No idea about #4

Do I have any of this right? Is Create capable of any of this? Am I underestimating its knowledge of LC, power and intelligence?
