If you've been using LiveCode for any length of time, you know that 2011 has been the year of custom controls. So in honor of 11/11/11, I'm happy to announce that tmCONTROL, a custom control suite for LiveCode, is now available from Tactile Media.



tmCONTROL is a collection of interface components built exclusively for LiveCode users who want to give their stacks a more customized user experience. Using custom controls is a way to brand your application with a look-and-feel that makes it stand out from the rest.

As a LiveCode developer, you may not have the time, the ability, or even the desire to create your own custom controls. You just know you want something different from the standard controls provided by LiveCode. Well, tmCONTROL is that "something different".

tmCONTROL is more than just a set of pretty buttons -- it's an evolving architecture developed to support a wide range of components and functions. The best part is, the components work virtually the same way as the LiveCode controls you already know and use. Just drag and drop the component you need from the palette into your stack and script it.

Plus, the component sets are designed to work together thematically in your applications. No need to hunt down bits and pieces to scrape together the look you want. All together, tmCONTROL includes five desktop themes, two iOS themes, a set of SmartControls, and a set of accordions, totaling over 100 components. On top of all that, dedicated editors are provided so you can customize the components to your needs.

tmCONTROL is available in 2 levels: a PRO level, which includes all collections, SmartControls, and support from Tactile Media; and a BASIC level that includes the core architecture only, and allows you to choose only the themes you want on an a-la-carte basis.

The PRO level is priced at $199, but is available for 11 days at an introductory price of $149. The BASIC level costs $59, with an introductory price of $39, plus the cost of one or more themes of your choice for $29 each.

Hi

I am completely new to LiveCode have no knowledge of coding what so ever but purchased LiveCode thinking it was was better then XCode, my problem and I have been searching around for something that is easy for even someone like me to create a app but able to edit when I have more knowledge on how to code with LiveCode.

Basically what I am trying to find is something I can drag and drop that already have the coding done for you, example I purchased MobGUI based of the 2011 videos which looked exciting just drag and drop and that it, but i guess the new version changed that because its not working as I expected.

right now I just want to create an app that I can put in the AppStore that will let me use the browser feature, emails, and sometime down the line database and that's all, but I cant find anything that will do what I want without me having to code everything.

Is this something your product does and do you have any videos online that I can see how it works.

Thanks for your interest. tmControl is essentially a set of skinned/skinnable controls that you use to create a themed appearance for your apps. Nothing is pre-programmed other than the controls' behavior so you would need to know LiveCode and its scripting language to be able to build apps with it. I don't know of any RunRev options that will allow you to use drag-and-drop construction to build an app, but there are many free online resources for you to learn about LiveCode:

Another book is from Dan Shafer called "Software at the thought of speed"

This book was written at a time when LiveCode was called Revolution. But this doesn´t matter,
because it gives really a good introduction into programming with LiveCode.

Hi Matthias,

You recommend "Software at the speed of thought", that book is not even an ebook. It mislead the customers by saying that it is a Smartbook, it does not even work on Mac because "Power PC applications are no Longer supported". Dont know why you recommended this, but you may have your reasons!

I have spent 30 dollars on it and understandably not very happy with the above.

Please make note of this before you recommend this again and and hopefully some one who is new to programming like me will not waste any more money.

If you have contact info for the seller, can you send a note and get your money back?

Also, all new macs since 2006 have been os x intel based and as such should work. So mac machines up to nearly 7 years old should work with the smartbook.

In defense of the selling site, the book was written in 2006, before the huge ebook influx, and from what I understand is far more interactive than a plain old ebook. There is a link on the page that describes what a smartbook is.

I truly wish it had worked for you, but as mentioned trying to get a refund is probably the best option, and if you send a note you could recommend they make things clearer for those with really old macs, as well as include the explanation of what a smartbook actually is more prominently.

For most people the recommendation is still a good one, hopefully you can get things worked out and get your refund.

Colin's book is very new, only a month old, and can be purchased as either a normal paper book or an ebook in EPUB or PDF format. It is fully compatible with any computer that can read PDF files or EPUB books, and if you purchase the paper book it doesn't even need a computer. It also describes all the new mobile features which were not even in LiveCode back in 2006.
