Ap submission complete. I'm published! =]

Post by FireWorx » Thu Mar 15, 2012 10:42 pm

Hi,
Just wanted to say thanks to all the guru's that helped me through the dev process on the two applications that were approved and as of today are for sale in the iStore worldwide. The "Cool Cal" is a calendar program that has a pretty slick user interface allows color coding entries by category (think work, family, exercise) and some different views.

Cool Cal
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cool-cal ... ?ls=1&mt=8

A little about the construction. An SQLight database is used to hold calendar event data and user preferences. The idea was to allow the user to pick different themes for his calendar (color of days and opacity of the calendar) and since submission I have now added a half a dozen cool backgrounds to select from. (Available next upgrade) This calendar does not do re occurring entries. Not yet anyway.

The Cool Fire Calendar is for firefighters and incorporates 5 very common fire department schedules.
The calendar entry data is queried from the database and inserted into html and then displayed in a scroller allowing the user to click on the delete and edit icons on each line in the scrolling window. This could be done with data grids but I never made it that far. Thanks to Dixie for getting me started with browser stuff as well and Gerry for his example stack on altering and displaying HTML in a browser inside a scroller. Klaus, Bernard, and others helped a ton as well. Today is a happy day and also my 52nd Birthday. =]
Cheers !
Dave
PS. This is not a plug. Just wanted to say thanks and offer some construction details in the event others can benefit.

Congrats! Feels good after all that work and frustration. I hope your iPad app is close behind.

Did you make your own springboard icons?

Great work...
I am hoping I am not too far away from submitting my first App..

Roughly how long did it take you to complete this from begin to end?

Hi,
As far as time thats a tough question. The Fire Department Shift Calendar was built by myself on a Mac SE 30 in HyperCard over 20 years ago. It was part of a larger overtime hiring and scheduling program. I migrated it to Windows in 1999 using MetaCard. I then rebuilt it in 2005 to utelize an SQL SERVER database. Since that time the program runs daily with very little tweeks. I purchased the IOS Livecode adition in September and built a PDF emergency response map viewer app for Ipad that is currently mounted in each of our fire engines and working very well. This App is rather custom however so I am working on ways to make it very usable and marketable to fire departments world wide.

So basicly 3 months getting feet wet in IOS on another project. Then 6 weeks merging the old Ap to IOS. Then I peeled the fire department side off of the fire calendar to make a civilian version and added some features that I thought would make it stand out and worth the 99 cent purchase. I mean lets face it there are alot of free calendars out there. So keep it simple and make it cool was my strategy. Making the conversion from the fire cal to a civilian calendar only took about 10 days.

Going through the submital process including distribution profile, certificates, screen shots, icons, splash screens, program description etc takes at least 6 hours. The Itunes store reviewed my app for 2 weeks and rejected my first sumital because my settings icon looked too much like there settings icon in the IOS settings. I resubmitted it and after a week they decided I wasn't going away so they passed me. =]

I enjoy working with LiveCode and I enjoy the problem solving aspect of writing and testing code. I like that there are many many diferent ways to solve problems with LiveCode. I like making tools that make life easier for friends and workers. I enjoy the interaction here on the forum. Steve Jobs said follow your heart because often times you can't connect the dots looking forward only looking back. If my app only gets downloaded 1 time by me I am happy. If it leads to bigger things I am happy. Either way I am Happy. It does feel good though to finish a goal. Thanks for your interest
Dave

P.S. I need to give credit to Sarah Reichelt who made an extremely usefull stack publicly available over 20 years ago. It contained many date & time snipets of code and then later she developed a calendar widget in Metacard. She provided the code to deal with leap years, determine the end of the month etc.
Her work and willingness to share helped me break ground on this project. So much thanks to her.

I just purchased the Cool Fire Cal and it keeps crashing and closing out when
Inserting data. I'm trying to find some app support to fix this problem. Any updates
Near future for fixes?

Hi FireWorxs,
It's been a few months since your initial release and I see there are a few complaints posted. I am very interested in how you are debugging these problems and what if any oversights you may have discovered. Memory issues? Incompatible software? Maybe something the users did like jailbreak their device. I assume you tested on all the devices available to you and it must have worked fine on them.

Thanks for any insights.
