IOS simulator and real devices

I am still in the test phase with Livecode and very enthusiastic about it.
My questions: To test on a real device it is possible only with a paid membership at Apple. How big is the difference of iOS simulator to the real devices such as iPhone/iPad is. Are there any surprises, or is this real enough?
The iPhone Simulator Retina is probably not real? The iPhone appears just in double size but not in 960-by-640-pixel resolution at 326 ppi (iPad 1024x768 at 132 ppi). Unfortunately, the graphics in the stack 960 is also displayed in double size. Or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks in advance.
