First iOS attempt

I have built a simple game which I'd hoped to give to my grandson to play with on an iPod Touch. I run an older MacBook with OS 10.7.5 (as high as it goes) and have been using the latest free LC. I read through a post from a few months back regarding xCode, and am wondering if, not only am I way over my head, but if what I'd hoped to do is even possible. When I first tried to build the standalone, I didn't even know xCode was required. I downloaded 4.6.3, but so far any attempts to do anything with the standalone build have failed. I've no interest in commercial development, and don't intend to pay Apple for any developer's licence. Since this didn't seem to be required on downloading xCode, I assume that shouldn't be necessary.
Is what I want to do possible with this configuration? I have a Touch of my own with iOS 7 for testing, should it ever get that far.
