Google and LC questions

Post by dunbarx » Mon Aug 17, 2015 6:43 pm

I see this all the time. New users, and maybe old ones, use Google to find answers to their questions.

Is this a good thing? I wonder how many fully work their issues out in that manner, and we never see them here or on the use list. Or how many either get little or no satisfaction, and do not know about these other resources. Is there a way to strengthen the whole of our world withal? I know the web page has links to the forums. Are they prominent enough?

There's certainly much that can be done to improve findability and disoverability of resources in our community. But the frequency of using external search engines like Google is just a natural thing, something most folks do in just about any domain. We live in a search-centric world now.

That's why I always try to write out "liveCode" instead of using LC.
I'm tired of it but it helps in searches.

Simon.

Do you generally get what you need by searching in that way? I never do. If I need advice I go right to the Forum.

Hi Craig,
I rarely use Google for searches of the forum, only for things like "gps".

On a related matter...

Why do people still use the Mailing List when the forum is so much easier to use and find things?

How do you find something in the Mail list archives?

Some folks on the list ask the same question about the forums. :) It's just a matter of taste. Some prefer one, others the other.

Google allows searches by specific domains, including subdomains, e.g.: <term> site:lists.runrev.com

I've noticed, though, that it's not possible to find some older posts in Google, as though Google periodically purges its index of info it believes is no longer valuable.

I don't much care for GMane's UI, but at least their index is generally more complete:

Frankly, i mostly search on Google as it finds it quicker and on more resources.
Sometimes reading on different sources helps understanding the problem better.
2nd i search on this forum.

I'm one of those who find forums tedious and slow to use, and much prefer conversations to go directly to my inbox where I can filter them in several ways.

When searching I always head directly to the list archives, which go back years. Gmane is one option but I prefer nabble:

This debate has resurfaced.

I am with golive. The forums seem well organized and accessible to me.

FYI:
Search gives different results:

I searched on sqlyoga.
Gmane found 223 matches, the newest 2015-05-18
nabble found 262 matches, the newest 2015-05-11 (more found, but not as up-to-date).

The forum found 49 matches.

Different content: GMane and Nabble are indexing the use-livecode mailing list, which is not only much older than the forums but also has an audience that has a much greater percentage of its members using SQLYoga.

Hi,

I never understood why the mailing list still exists - using it is a PITA, IMHO

Besides, I usually google "Livecode my question words". It usually finds what I'm looking for, and I don't have to log in before, or to do other boring things.

Have fun!
All code published by me here was created with Community Editions of LC (thus is GPLv3).
If you use it in closed source projects, or for the Apple AppStore, or with XCode
you'll violate some license terms - read your relevant EULAs & Licenses!

It exists because people have different preferences. Many of those who prefer mailing lists feel that forums are a PITA. Vive la différence. Everyone can have what they prefer.
