Now that common sense has prevailed and the US of A (land of the free) has declared it legal to jailbreak our iPhones etc... I'm pretty sure other countries will follow suit. How does runrev feel about revmobile now that it is perfectly feasable to install rev on our iphones and ipads without jobs poking his nose in?

Probably (but I'm not a lawyer and I can't know for sure), jailbreaking your iPhone has always been legal in most countries, because usually once you have bought something you can do with it whatever you like, as long as you don't use it to commit a crime. Jailbreaking in itself isn't a crime. So, it has always been perfectly feasible to install RevMobile on your iPhone.

The question is how big the market for software for jailbroken iPhones is. As long as it isn't clear that this market is huge, further investments in RevMobile for iPhone make no sense. Apple will do all it can to keep this market as small as possible.

I suspect that Apple tolerates jailbreaking because it adds a "Coolness" factor of iPhone ownership for some users.
Anytime it looks like it's going to intefere with their revenue stream Apple will close the door...

I don't belive apple is "allowing" anything. They have been TOLD it is legal. Effectively wiping the floor with their ridiculous SDK developer agreement.

The big deal for me is that it was actually a non techie that told me the news with much excitement and promptly asked me to jailbreak their device with no reservations.

How is this not opening a whole new market? It lifts the taboo of jailbreaking where many users would never have dreamt on doing this before.

I'd still be a little careful. Apple can still decide to not support jailbroken iPhones, for example by declaring that your jailbroken iPhone is "incompatible" with the (future) updated iTunes Store. Apple can set conditions and it is up to you to accept them or not. If you don't accept them, we now know that you won't break the law but Apple isn't obliged to continue to provide you with their services, although they can't keep you from using someone else's services. If you want to continue to update your iOS and buy apps in the app store, you might not want to jailbreak your iPhone. I'm not saying Apple is going to be that harsh, but I don't think it would be illegal for Apple to be.

I haven't head about this "jail-breaking" of the iPhone court ruling. Does anyone have a link to an article about it?
