How get an AVD e.g. Tablet into the ADV Manager

Hello everyone,
I'm new to mobile development and I have a problem with "starting an Android virtual device" on LiveCode.
I bought the book "LiveCode Mobile development" from Colin Holgate.
On page 60 I crashed on point 4.
I downloaded "android-sdk-macosx".
I navigated to the "android-sdk-macosx:tools" folder.
I opened "Android".
The program "Terminal" started and after that the "Android SDK Manager" started.
From the "Tools" - menu I selected "Manage AVDs...".
"Android Virtual Device Manager" opens.
But under "Android Virtual Devices" it says "No AVD available".
On point 4 page 60 it says: "Select Tablet from the lis of devices" … etc.
ButI don't see any Device listed.
(The book says: "there should be two, one is called "Tablet".)
The Readme document that comes with the downloaded android-sdk-macosx says:
"In order to start developing applications, you must install the Platform-tools
and at least one version of the Android platform, using the SDK Manager.
Platform-tools contains build tools that are periodically updated to support new
features in the Android platform (which is why they are separate from basic
SDK tools), including adb, dexdump, and others.
To install Platform-tools, Android platforms and other add-ons, you must
have an Internet connection, so if you plan to use the SDK while
offline, please make sure to download the necessary components while online.
To start the SDK Manager, please execute the program "android"."
It doesn't say what to do next.
Can anyone hep me to go further in the proces?
Thanks in advance,
Joop Sleijster
