Add-ons for Forum

Post by endernafi » Mon Jan 27, 2014 4:40 am

Hello,

Runrev Forums are a great place to share ideas, ask questions, etc.
But I feel that it's fell short in some aspects when compared to more modern forum types.
I know that it's a huge burden to completely revamp it.
But here are some ideas to make it slightly better and the reasons behind them:

* Thank You button.
Writing a post just to thank the author is just increasing the clutter;
many of us -including me- doesn't want that and not writing a thank you has another drawback as being not grateful.

* Like button.
A simple *like* button will serve differently than *thanks* button;
sometimes there are posts which are so clever / funny / out-of-the-box but they ain't intended to be answer to a question or solution to a problem.
That's the time to hit that *like* button.

* Experience Points or Ranks
Posting too much doesn't mean that member is experienced.
Having experience points calculated by the year of membership, count of posts, how many *thanks* she/he got, how many *likes* she/he got, etc.
could lead us to take that post more seriously.
Having more experience points shouldn't climb up the post higher like stackoverflow; it's a whole different concept.

* Avatar
Ok, this not a game or some other juvenile forum 8)
And *badges* after Kickstarter campaign still serves a lot.
But expressing herself/himself may be important to especially new-comers.
Adding a profile picture, choosing an appropriate avatar may give us an insight about the member.

One may think that these are pet features and the team has no time to deal with the forum which already functions fine
{Remember, don't fix if it works}
especially during these busy times in preparation of LiveCode Next Gen.
But any of these would improve the forum experience.

My two cents :wink:
