Problems with LiveCode updater

Post by DavidF. » Sat Sep 10, 2016 3:27 pm

hi,

I have just installed LiveCode (Community 8.0.2, build 13025). The updater offered 8.1.0-rc-2 and I thought I would take it up on it. Once it downloaded it started installing. After half an hour the installation bar had hardly budged and was clearly not going anywhere. Cancel didn't work, I had to kill the process. Then an "installation failed" message came up ("installer slave quit without eof"). I couldn't interact with this dialogue box as anytime it had focus the cursor was "stuck" to it - moving the cursor just moved the box around. So, back to good old process explorer and killed that process as well.

Is this what I should expect from the updater? Is it worth using? If I want to update would I be better uninstalling manually, downloading the update and installing it? I appreciate that for a beginner like me there's maybe not much value in updating to every new version, but if it was quick and hassle-free (it was neither) I would probably do it, just to stay current. I mean that as a beginner I'm not going to be able to say "I want to update for such-and-such a specific reason", but an improvement's an improvement, even if I'm not aware what the improvement is...

Using Windows 7, 64-bit.

cheers

DavidF.

Hi DavidF,

The auto-updater on Windows is affected by a bug, so under some particular circumstances it is possible that it will not work as expected. For now, I suggest you directly download any new version from the downloads page: http://downloads.livecode.com/livecode/

Note that you do *not* need to uninstall an older version before installing a new one. You can have as many LiveCode versions installed as you want. Each one of them is put into a different folder.

Best,
Panos

Yes, they only implemented this to annoy you! 8)

Just kidding, what Panos said, bookmark that page and stay up-to-date manually like I do for several years.
I don't trust any automatism that I did not programm by myself! :D

Best

Fair enough, it just seemed like a neat piece of integration and way of staying up-to-date. If manually updating I'll probably be more conservative and update only when I'm aware of reasons for it. Which is maybe no bad thing.

On the multiple versions - I appreciate I can have more than one LC hanging around, but again as a beginner I've no particular need to and find it less confusing to just have one installation at a time.

Basically just wanted to check if the updater has known problems, seems it does and I'll steer clear.

Currently working my way through "Programming LiveCode for the Real Beginner" with occasional side looks at "The Complete HyperCard 2.2 Handbook". I will doubtless be popping up here as questions occur!
