LiveCode with Sonoma 14.2?

Post by danielrr » Fri May 31, 2024 6:32 pm

Hi all,

I can't make LiveCode start with Sonoma 14.1 (tried with 8.2.0, 9.5.1, 9.6.1, 9.6.3). Reading some posts in this forum it seems as if it is implied that LC doesn't work in Sonoma, but I'm not sure. Is this the case? And if so, can it be fixed?

best,
Daniel

Older versions do not work with Sonoma. The new OS broke something with menus.

In general when an OS upgrade breaks an app, you would expect the app to updated to address the issue. And this is the case here too.

Your options are to upgrade to the latest version (ie take up a subscription), or if you wish to stick with free lunch then search online for the opensource xtalk effort to maintain 9.6.3 (The last community version). Literally search for “opensource xTalk”

If you can afford it I would recommend the former, if not I believe the latter works and will be updated for a while at least, but I haven’t tried it myself…

I run LC 963 on MacOS Sonoma 14.5 on an almost daily basis.

Everyone confirmed issues with Sonoma and LC released a fix for this a month or two after Sonoma was released.

Are you saying this wasn’t needed?
If so, how would you suggest the OP runs 9.6.3 as he already reported he can’t?

Perhaps a fix is available, but your post suggests the official version, which preceded Sonoma by a couple of years or so, runs just fine.

Do elaborate…

No, I run a patched version, and that can be readily found by looking "in the usual places", and as LC 963Open Source is, well, open Source, no-one should be fussed about that.

And as LiveCode let LC 9.6.3 Open source "go free" quite a while back now I am not entirely sure what is meant by 'the official version'; especially as LiveCode offers no support for it.

It’s not hard. The official version is LC’s last release. Any changes by branching from the last released version are neither the same version, nor the same product. This is why version numbers are assigned. And LC have made it clear that opensource branches should not be distributed under the same branding (or indeed discussed on this forum), hence the different opensource name.

I alluded to this by suggesting the OP search for “opensource” and “xTalk”. And rather than patching an abandoned software I would actually suggest migrating fully to the opensource effort continuing this, as there will be some ongoing development. And hopefully some users may even be able to contribute back to that opensource effort.

I posed the question and write all of this not to pick on your post, but for information for others searching for this answer.

Thanks to everyone who has responded. I have a LiveCodePro license, but I'm concerned about having to use LiveCode on a computer that can't use the community version (to the point that I may have to do without either LiveCode or that computer, for example, if I'm traveling). LiveCode 9.3.11 (paid) seems to work well with Sonoma 14.15. The community version, nope. Maybe I'm being very obtuse, but I can't find 'the usual places' to download a fix for the community version. Any help in this regard would be welcome.

again, thanks yo all who responded my query

The owner of these LiveCode forums have requested that we not provide links here to the open source project.

Your question would be appropriately handled in the forums for that project.

See Stam"s guidance in his last reply here on how to find it.
