Compress List in Custom Property

In a lesson titled "Array," the intro text states that a developer at runrev compressed a list within the custom properties. I see how he calls it and decompresses it, but do not know how he compressed it. I too have a large list which in note pad it is 1.7MB. Can anyone give me the method of compressing a large list in the custom properties as done in that lesson?
