xcode for Snow Leopard 10.6.8
Hello,
I don't have my new Mac yet so am looking for xcode for snow leopard 10.6.8. I read that I want xcode 4.2 but that only appears for Lion. Do I really want "Xcode 3.2.5 and iOS SDK 4.2" which is available and will that work with LiveCode? FYI - I have a paid dev account (I've read that xcode 4.2 is not free like all other versions).
Thanks for your help!

Re: xcode for Snow Leopard 10.6.8
Thanks, but I still need to know which version will work on snow leopard OSX 10.6.8...
LiveCode set-up says:
When running on Snow Leopard, LiveCode uses the iOS 5.0 SDK to produce device builds. This is available as part of Xcode 4.2.
The 4.3 and 5.0 simulators are supported on Snow Leopard.
apple lists 4.1 through 4.3.3 for Lion, and 3.x versions for snow leopard...
tnx

Hi Roddy,
As Thierry has mentioned, the iOS developer centre will have access to Xcode 4.2 for Snow Leopard. Please see below for a screenshot showing the download available-

I discovered in an Apple Dev Forum that you have to be both a paid iOS dev and a paid OSX dev to see the download link. However someone posted it and it is downloading now.

Thanks for your responses... I think I have a few more gray hairs.

Hi Roddy,
That could be why we can see it. We have both a Mac and iOS developer accounts linked in our developer portal
I'm glad that you managed to find a link to the download. Keep us posted on how you get on.
Kind Regards,

No, that is definitely not true. You *do* have to have registered an Apple ID, and you do have to set up a link to a credit card account as part of the process, but it's not necessary for any money to change hands. The XCode download is free from Apple, although you have to do a *lot* of searching around the dev site to come up with previous versions.I discovered in an Apple Dev Forum that you have to be both a paid iOS dev and a paid OSX dev to see the download link.
I'm not at my Snow Leopard machine at the moment, but later on I can check which version of XCode is running on it.

While an estimated 19% of Mac users are still using Snow Leopard, it may be worth noting that Apple appears to have stopped providing security updates for it, suggesting the need to move forward to later versions:
Snow Leopard updates are probably done—here are your OS X upgrade options

I'm not sure that's entirely relevant: my old mac mini (the one that's running Snow Leopard) has a 32-bit Intel processor and so its upgrade path is quite limited. Our mac air and macbook pro are upgraded to 10.9, but the mini will never get there. And so I have different versions of Xcode on the different macs.

That seems to be a key reason so many still use SL, which is why so many news sites have been far more, shall we say, "expressive" than Ars about the seeming abandonment of such a large portion of the Mac user base.mwieder wrote:I'm not sure that's entirely relevant: my old mac mini (the one that's running Snow Leopard) has a 32-bit Intel processor and so its upgrade path is quite limited.
I only mention it for those who keep their older Macs connected to the Internet. Like XP soon, it may be safer to move such machines to LAN-only for testing.

Re: xcode for Snow Leopard 10.6.8
From what I've read on various forums, I understand that 4.2 was the version where Apple decided to start charging for Xcode but then quickly reversed their decision. So versions prior to and after 4.2 are free. There are many posts by people not being able to see this version until they have a paid Dev account. Try logging in to the dev center with an Apple ID that does not have a paid account - I'll bet you a beer that the download is not available.mwieder wrote:No, that is definitely not true. Hi Roddy,
Just to be clear, you cannot publish apps using liveCode for iOS on anything less than Mavericks.
Might not bother you.

Roddy-
I missed the part where you were looking for just Xcode 4.2. At any rate they're all available for download from developer.apple.com (yes, without a paid Apple dev account, because I refuse to do that), even 4.2, although 4.2 does say that it's for Lion. The most recent Xcode version that Apple specifically says is for Snow Leopard is 3.2.6. That's if you take Apple's word for it.
