Hi,

sorry if this has been asked I couldn't find what I was looking for by searching.

I have just tried the LiveCode community free download (Live Code 6.0.1) and when trying to login it comes up with the error 'An error occurred while trying to contact the server. Please try again later'

I have checked my web filter to see if that is blocking anything but nothing is showing up.

I have tried going through what is mentioned on these two pages but it didn't work.

Any help would be great thanks.

You should email this error to:
support@runrev.com
The RunRev website was recently updated (but I'd be very surprised if activation was left out).

They still have hickups here and there. I had the same problem last wednesday, but on thursday it worked. So I suggest just to try again a bit later.

Hi,

I have sorted the problem I was having with this, it was to do with the way we have our profiles setup the app data that is used is not on the computers C: drive but on a network share.

Is there a way for me to tell LiveCode to look somewhere else for the licence file so that it can be in a single central location and not in everyone's profiles?

I emailed the RunRev support last week but am waiting for a reply.

Thanks.

if they take more then 3-4 business days to reply, then that is very unusual, and you should bug em again ;)

I realize as I am typing this that the thread I am in was over 4 years ago, however I find myself in much the same situation.
I had downloaded (many years ago) one of the first community editions available, before they switched to skip registration on the installers.

I had sent (at that time) the required email address, and received (again at that time) the working code for the program.

I had dabbled with it for a while, but then lost track of using it while busy with other work in other environments.

I did download and try other versions of it, however I would like to go back and work in some of the older versions I have on the system. The problem is that when I try to activate it, I get "an error occurred while attempting " message. A year or so ago, when I was trying this, I also got that message and had found some stub articles on downloading a license text, however I was never able to get that to work, and can no longer even find the articles.

Is there any way to activate these older community editions?

I believe the activation server was taken offline a while ago. You could sign into your user account and see if there is an activation file there for older versions.

But I'm not sure why you'd bother since the latest version will open any stack created any time. I just opened a LC 3.5 stack yesterday with LC 9.

Oh my gosh, Jacque, I really owe you an apology, I had read this and meant to reply, but apparently had a senior moment

I really appreciated your suggestion, but apparently there was no love on the new version of the account server. I had no licenses listed for the older community version on there. I had also tried something I had come across with a 'generic' license, but that failed miserably as well.

I wound up contacting them through chat though (Heather was wonderfully helpful) and continue to look into it on my own. In odd moments, you know, like when I'm wondering whats on tv

Thank you again for the reply, it is always appreciated :)

* Edit - Heather came through like a champ, happily enjoying all the 6.0.1 goodness I was looking for :)

Heavens, no apology necessary. I think most of us just drop little comments here and don't expect much back. You're in good hands with Heather, she can fix just about anything.

She was absolutely awesome, and amazingly knew exactly what topic I was obliquely referencing about the lesson involving getting the older ide running off the top of her head, an amazing ability I wish I had been able to cultivate myself

Still working on getting the mc IDE working, I keep getting a bit further but you know you'll be the first to know if I manage it. What I have seen of it so far shows a lot of promise, shockingly, for instance I really like the toolbar being folded into the menu bar (similar to the rIDE seen elsewhere on the forums, but in a horizontal configuration without the extra space taken up).

But that is for another discussion and probably as you pointed out of little interest to most of the membership/users.

I understand your reference to dropping comments and not expecting much back having been a mod on a few boards in my time, but I always like to let someone know if something worked (or didn't and if I can manage it, why). Quirk in my nature I suppose, having been left many times wondering about it myself after posting for someone else's benefit :)

As one of the former maintainers of the MC IDE project, I'm curious: why?

Heh, somehow I feel I should have guessed you had had your finger in that pie somewhere ;)

I think I maybe mentioned somewhere along the line that I like to look at and sometimes work with older and maybe easier tools, especially when learning something new, as it gives me some insights as to what came before. I'm a real latecomer to this whole game, but I did gaze back in the interwebz-crystalball and history of what came before as far back as I could. I find it shocking that as popular as Hypercard was, there is not as much information as you might think around about it.

I have an old mac plus, and the install discs here for the OS, that I never really got around to using. I may wind up resurrecting all that again and seeing what I can get going in that, wonder where I left the manuals at :?: I also have the first ibm computer I assembled around here somewhere, an '88 XT. Embarrassing, aint it? I do still have all the manuals around for both of those, although putting my finger on the location of them may prove a challenge as well.

I came across the mc ide project in one of those yahoo groups like the ones you have in your links section, and find it intriguing and looking very simple. I have all the files I was able to access, and even contacted Jacque (the contact point if it didn't work) when I couldn't seem to get it to fire up (was using 6.5 at the time, went all the way down to 6.1 but for whatever reason may need an even earlier version to actually get it to spark as is, or it is possible I also mis-understood the directions for setting it up, but I keep trying ).

Among the things I was able to get going, the dictionary appears to work flawlessly on its own ( you know how much I like dictionary, right  ), and I got the main toolbar up (although some errors referencing objects pop with it), and the little bar with the [Menu bar] [Msg box] actually appears to be working, but again with errors.

Jacque was kind enough to give me a very in-depth explanation on the whys, hows, whats that cause it not to work, and of course the reasons the efforts were discontinued, and I absolutely understand and agree with it. After all, when only 1 person is left who is interested in something, that 1 person should do it if he can. I think eventually I can :)

It also gives me more directions to learn about, since I'll likely be at some point going through every part of reconstructing it, and I never turn down a chance to figure something out if I can. My wife's term for it is 'frankensteining', it applies to almost everything I do, mechanical or not.

Probably TMI right?

The last MC IDE I built for LC used LC 5.5.4. That was 4 years ago but if I remember right, the installer worked.

Thank you again Jacque, it gives me a starting point on figuring out the differences =^>

FWIW the most recent LC version I used with MC IDE was 6.0. Might work with later versions, I just haven't tried. But I know firsthand that v6.0 works.
