Center text vertically within hilited line?

I am having difficulties trying to figure out how or if it's possible to center a line of text vertically within a hilite. If I have a text field with a list of data in it, then I set my textSize to 20 and I have fixedLineHeight to true because I want the user to have plenty of room to tap a single line, but I don't want the textSize to be beyond 20. Then my text line height is at 26 which is about the space I want for one single line. However, in doing this, my text within my hilite is at the bottom of the hilite rather than being centered in the hilited row. So there is a gap above the text of empty hilite, but the text placed at the bottom vertically in the hilite. I'm not sure if there is a simple solution for this or if it's even possible, but it's quite annoying and would be thankful to any insight on how to adjust this without going to htmlText. Thanks

Set the textshift of char 1 to -1 of fld x to -6

Tinker with the shift value until it looks right. Also, you can't set the textshift of a field, only its characters.
