Browser Widget

Post by Lonnie » Sat May 30, 2020 6:06 am

Hi Gang,

I'm back as promised!!

I can get YouTube videos to play in the Browser Widget using both URL as well as Embeded Code, but not LiveCode videos like:
LiveCode .com / academy / livecode-cloud-academy / 82 /

The web site comes up but the play button isn't live. The cursor changes when you put the mouse over the play button ... but nada.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks again,

Lonnie

Hi @Loonie, which LC Version are you using and on which device are you getting the error?
If you are not in the last LC Version (9.6 rc2) I'd suggest you try it.
There are some fixes related with movie playing on the browser widget that were fixed on that release.

For instance: https://quality.livecode.com/show_bug.cgi?id=22640

Please report back.

Hope it helps.
Simon

Hi Simon,

I'm using Indy Edition, 9 . 6 . 0 - dp - 4 | Build 15513 I assume Is rc2 is newer than dp-4?

My app is running on a Windows desktop for now.

How are you able to include an html link in your response? I can't even post the version number.

Thanks for your help,

Lonnie

The "dp" release designation is for "Developer Preview" - that is, a "work in progress" from LiveCode on the way to the next version for release, with features that will interest developers who want to see and feed back on the progress. This set of releases may possibly have instabilities, partially developed features and maybe downright bugs introduced and even regressions.
While LiveCode dp releases is meant to be progress, not a minefield, using the DP editions is not certain to be free of bugs and problems. Indeed, one of the best ways to get bugs and issues dealt with is to use DP editions as much as possible to test, and feed back any problems by updating the https://quality.livecode.com bug tracking site.
The "rc" versions are "Release Candidate" editions where new features are no longer being introduced and more focus is given to transition towards a final stable version release, with bug fixes and more "general" improvements being the significant changes between versions.

As an anti-spam measure, you need to have a certain amount of posts on the forum before being able to include links, or dotted phrases that look like they might be links to the automated filters. The recent reported quantity is 8 or more posts being required before you are convincing enough as a genuine user and not a spammer/spambot, so in your case you can try in the next post or two and links (or dotted phrases) should be accepted. (It's not personal- we can tell you aren't a spambot, but that's just how the filter works. )

Thanks Sparkout.
I don't think I'm the one to report errors ... just "create them" at this point.
I'll try to download the rc version.

Well anyone could, and should report a repeatable error - you don't have to be an old hand to do that. Just do a search first to see whether the same issue has already been reported.

We're doing weekly webinars, Learning LiveCode Q&A. I'll mention my issue there.
Thanks again

Hi Loonie, I've tried the URL you are having trouble with on the iPhone simulator and even though the page does load the video doesn't play. Worth noting is the fact that I had to use https://... for the URL in order for the page to load, I remember reading something about the browser widget accepting only secure pages. Anyway this should have nothing to do with the fact that the video doesn't play

I'd follow SparkOut suggestion and open a quality report

Regards
Simon

To be honest, I was responding regarding the question of the difference between dp and rc releases and mentioned the quality site as part of that. I haven't really studied the original problem, so was not suggesting that this issue IS a reportable bug, yet.

The Academy materials are paid for aren't they? So presumably will only be available to play by a signed in registered user. Did you use the browser widget to navigate to and sign into the learning resource pages? Or just set the url to the video page copied from another browser that had been signed in? Anyway, I would ask about the course materials with LC HQ first, and see whether they think it should be registered on the quality site.

@SparkOut regarding your question

After reading your remark I did sign into the page but nothing has changed, BTW this time I used LC 9.6.0 Stable release.

Best
Simon

ok I don't know what the problem is, I would ask LC if they can shed any light on it and whether it should be submitted as a bug.
