David Williams gave a great presentation on the basics of game design.
And for those who were't able to attend.

Hi, I just signed up for this academy and I'm really excited. However, one odd thing I noticed is that when I downloaded the LiveCode trial and activated it, it only gave me 30 days. Isn't this supposed to be a 7 week course? (and that's not even including the 2 weeks at Xmas) Is the intention that you must purchase the full version if you want to finish the whole course?

Mclure, welcome to LiveCode... like you I am excited about the December Game Academy and hope to learn tons if I can keep up with the pace (I did the Summer Academy and found I learned a lot even though I never did finish all of the assignments... they go at a pretty brisk pace so you really need to keep on top of it). Enough of my rambling, when your current 30 days is up you can just reactivate your license (under Help menu, last item) and it will be relicensed as long as the Game Academy is going on. BTW, I am just passing on a post I read from Heather (support@runrev) which she posted to another forum user who asked the same question. Sorry, for the rambling. Hope that answers your question.

I am following this course to get to know LiveCode. I am relatively new to programming - apart from my classes in Turbo Pascal and Fortran years ago in school. Even though I am not into gaming, this is a very interesting and useful course.
I also like the concept a lot. Imagine if you could get a course like this for every major piece of software you can buy.
