Compile for Solaris?
Hi folks, newbie here, going through the 30 day trial. Coming from background in C++, Java, PERL, C#. Currently use Activestate Perldev for compiling cross-platform utilities, but I'm looking to build a large enterprise management application, so I'm evaluating Revolution. Looking to build desktop GUI's for all platforms; Rev seems a winner for that. But for the back-end processing, I'm not sure if I can do this with Rev. Specifically, I want to provide my servers for Windows, Linux, and Solaris platforms.
So.
Anybody know how to compile Rev apps for Solaris? I see a check-box for Linux, but the Solaris options are not enabled.
Thanks,

Dear shunyun,
IIRC, Rev 2.2 (it might also be 2.0.1 or 2.2.1) was the last version that included an engine for Solaris. Rev 2.6.5 is the last version that is theoretically able to create standalones for Solaris, using the 2.2 engine.
I myself am very much interested in engines for Solaris and FreeBSD, but I don't expect these engines to become available anytime soon. You could ask support for it and if you do please include my name as a supporter of your request.
RunRev might be willing to sell you a license and additionally give you an older version that includes a Solaris engine. Note that the Solaris engine is incompatible with Rev 2.7 and later.
Best regards,
Mark

Thanks for the quick reply, Mark. I'm still evaluating, so I obviously can't get anything that a paying customer couldn't. It actually concerns me that you aren't able to get cooperation from RunRev; are they difficult to work with or has this just been a low priority for you?Mark wrote:IIRC, Rev 2.2 (it might also be 2.0.1 or 2.2.1) was the last version that included an engine for Solaris. I'm a bit concerned that I couldn't find this answer from their website or documentation and, for that matter, that the Solaris option is still showing in the current product. Is RunRev slow to maintain their documentation or is this info available only to registered users?

Dear shunyun,
I haven't said that RunRev isn't co-operative. However, a request from one single person to compile Revolution for two more operating systems apparently isn't enough to get it done. If there is sufficient interest from Revolution's use base, RunRev Ltd might decide to release Revolution for Solaris and FreeBSD.
Best,
Mark

Ah, I misinterpreted. Thanks for the clarification. I'm just poking a stick at the product, kicking the tires. It's not a deal breaker, certainly; I'm just trying to figure out what tools/systems I can replace with Revolution.Mark wrote:I haven't said that RunRev isn't co-operative.

If and when I do buy, I'll certainly make that request and include your recommendation.
Thank you, Mark.

looking back over your original reply made me think more...Mark wrote: RunRev might be willing to sell you a license and additionally give you an older version that includes a Solaris engine. Note that the Solaris engine is incompatible with Rev 2.7 and later.
If I were to get an older version for use on Solaris, what functionality would I be missing? I'm thinking of this for creation of workhorse utilities, such as automation and polling, but no need for a GUI. Would I have to use the older IDE?
