What determines whether or not the various buttons for Quote or Code work? I used to be able to use them but they do not work for me now. I can't even get smilies.

These are determined by broken functionality. It has been so for months, and is a small pain.

I was taught to do it by hand, prepending ".

EDIT: I thought the quotes would allow the text to appear in the clear. Apparently, if you do this, you get a code window.

EDIT AGAIN:

you prepend bracket & "code" & bracket, and append bracket & "/code" & bracket (see if this works, sheesh)
