Anyone built Dropbox like app for own server?

Hello all,
I've got about a gazillion GB of storage across 3 servers and still I'm looking at dropbox/google drive/sky drive... Why?
No really. I mean, I shouldn't be right?
What does dropbox offer that I can't make? Aside from the fact I can't make it yet?
Anyone have a start on this? Desktop only.

Hi Simon, interesting idea - you would have to have ssl and fixed ip on your server and these would cost about £90 per year whilst my Dropbox pro costs about the same amount. But if you already had ssl and ip then I quite agree, it would be a great project

Hi Simon,
I have looked at the idea but ended up setting up a server with the open source product Owncloud. It has the standard dropbox features, as well as desktop and mobile clients and works pretty well.
It does sort of take some of the fun out of it (using a pre-made package rather than programing yourself I mean) but if you are only looking for something for yourself, you may want to take a look.
