What do you think about Revolution 3 ?

here are a few remarks :

-new script editor : perfect. Makes sense.

-new dictionary : yep much better interface. Easier.

-gradient graphics : okay.... looks very nice, but gadget

-multidimensional arrays : sounds great, but no use for a beginner like me

-resources center : gadget

-start center : gadget

Is that all ? I mean RunRev doesn't say more about other add ons, enhancements etc.

what would you have loved to see in the release?

I think it is a good one, not to say a very good one. For me the new arrays are already making it worthwhile upgrading.
I do not care too much about the new script editor, even though it is nice, glx2 for me is far superior. I would not want to switch to revs built in one. Besides the features you mentioned there is quite a few things that got fixed. For me most importantly the SSL feature. The list of fixes is quite long if you are reading the changelogs. I am very happy with this release and eagerly awaiting the stuff they cook up next.

Oh don't get me wrong ! I didn't try to be negative there.

I've got sincerely no idea what should be a Revolution 3, 3.5 or 4.


I was just trying to :

-find out all the new stuff that Rev 3 gives (it's not yet listed)

-and "reading" the main new stuff (already advertised on their website) through my beginner experience.

I'm already very happy with 2.9.

But if I had to make a wish, I would look on the Databases side.
I'm convinced that Revolution is the perfect front-end for DB.

For instance, something like SQL query builder, a function to graphically represent a database structure and links between table.

Okay, okay, I know I'm sure we can already do it with current Revolution?

I would love to see a Runrev application + MySQL server, running like Filemaker Pro.

Royalties free... it could make a killing among SMEs.

(by the way : I've got both 2.9 and 3, installed on the same hardisk different directory. Is it okay, not a problem with registry ?)

No problem with the registry. I have quite a few versions happiely coexist on my HDs since years. Yes, Rev is a very good front end tool. I have been making front ends to Java servers (communicating with Rev through XML) and also a mySQL front end. Sure it could be more point and clicky, as it still requires quite a bit of scripting. However, well possible.

Hi Bankok,

Actually, it is highly recommandable to install versions 2.8.1 and later in the same directory. This allows you to use the version manager in the Help menu and to use the uninstaller to remove particular version.

Unfortunately, the uninstaller leaves a few files behind, but it will at least clean up some files from the Installation Data folder. After using the uninstaller, you can safely remove the folder that contained the removed version. Hmm... let me know if you don't understand this ;-)

Total waste of time effort and money. I found it to be a very poor product with extremely poor documentation. The PDF files seemed to have a lot of 'hard wired' coding in them and the videos always crashed my system. I put it down to experience, dumped the software, blocked runrev.com on my email and moved on to something else.

If you would have posted anything earlier we might have been able to help move your work forward.

If you reconsider let us know. Sure, like any software Rev ain't perfect. But I've not yet found another tool that provides a higher ROI for the development work I do. If I can help share some of those productivity gains with you I'd be happy to do so.

jpfife, I could not disagree more. I just started looking at Revolutions Media cause I used to love Hypercard and it looks really good.

I have quickly got into it and the documentations is fine excepting a few holes which have driven me to these lists. I have already obtained from the list info on how to address cells in table fields and am now looking for info on how to call functions defined in objects other than the one from which the call is being made. (I think I will post this as a query) But apart from that, my comment on the documentation would be: ok so far.
