Going but not coming

I have a message field which I want to be
visible during a long process - even though
the cursor is set to wait.

Strange, but when the visible is set to true in
the code it doesn't show but if I make it visible in the
Inspector the programme makes it invisible at the
relevant code line.

Any possible reasons?

Answer: The part of the programme which I though was taking
a lot of time wasn't so if the message field did show it was on
and off so fast it couldn't be detected by the human eye.

Another problem solved just by posting it here.
