After working on revisions to a program for about 3 years, I all of a sudden can not add any of the tools (menus, buttons, labels, etc to the card body. Have 517 cards in the stack and all suddenly don't work. I have not changed the stack script in over 3 years.

I can edit contents of text files on the cards, just can't add new things to the card. I can still resize scrolling text fields, and I can delete fields, buttons, etc.. but once deleted I can not replace with another field or button or label.

Any clues as to what has happened?

Klaus, please move this somewhere, like "Talking liveCode".

In the meantime, please say what LC version, what OS, etc.

Have you tried saving to another version? I suppose the cantModify is out if you can delete controls. We may need to see the stack.

3. As Craig said, check if the stack has its "cantmodify" property set.

Began with the LC 3.0 series, then the 4.0 series, then the 5.0 series and lastly 5.5.3

OS is Windows 7, intial versions were using XP. These were with both desktop and laptops. I have also tried on a Windows 8 laptop.

The Stack Property Inspector has Metal Textuure, Shadow, Visible, and Purge Stack on Close checked.

The Card Property has Opaque checked. There is also 3-D checked, which I can not un-check.

I have tried copies on a couple of the LC 6 series and also the LCC 7.0(1) with no beneficial effect.

A 504 card version still runs as desired with buttons etc. being able to be added or deleted. I am trying to figure out which cards were added or modified between that version and the present 517 card version. I also do not know when the problem began, since I did not notice it until I tried to go back and added a menu button with a couple of card selection choices about 3 months ago.

I set up the card layout with card 1 and then kept duplicating cards as I expanded the program. Basically a label on top, then either a text box or photo field, then two fields for the User ID and Serial #, then 3 buttons near the bottom "Quit" "Print" and "Continue". I am not the sharpest error spotter in the business, but I can not see any thing different from card to card in terms of the basic layout, content, or scripts.

I do appreciate all of the helpful suggestions.

had the same problem once, try suspending messages in LC beafor opening the stack and then enable messages again
