LC 10/Create and Linux?

Hi all,

I'm confused about how I'm supposed to run LC on Linux at present.

I have a LC Create account. The IDE downloads only for mac/win - there is no Linux installer as far as i can see.
There is a Linux Server option but this is obviously not the same thing.

Looking at the website, the "standard plan" i used to have has been replaced by LC Create, however LC 10 is available as student plan or for education.
LC Create includes "classic" which is pretty much LC 10, but you can't install LC Create on Linux.
There are options for getting LC 10, which presumably includes Linux installers, but this is only available for Student and Education licenses.

So while i can run community 9.6.3 on Linux, i would very much prefer to run the IDE I'm paying for.
The only option, judging by the LiveCode website seems to be get a separate student or education license which is obviously inappropriate.

Any suggestions?

Yeah, that's the current limitation. LC Create doesn’t ship a Linux IDE build, only Windows/macOS. If you want something newer than community 9 .6 .3 on Linux, the only real workaround is running it through Wine or a VM. Otherwise, you’re stuck until they decide to publish Linux installers for Create – which hasn’t been announced.

Rusty was clear and spot on.

I only mention this to confirm, since that was a recent discussion, that there are a lot of LC people out there that have never posted here. I wonder how many.

Versions for Linux-32 and Linux-64 of LiveCode 'classic' are available: but a version of Create for Linux is not.

And there is an alternative IDE available.

There is also a web-implementation of xTalk being actively developed which is almost completely platform agnostic.

Can you provide details about the alternative IDE?

Your confusion is understandable — the current LiveCode licensing and download structure for Linux feels inconsistent. From what you described, it seems the newer LiveCode Create subscription mainly targets macOS and Windows for the IDE, while Linux support has effectively been left tied to older “Classic”/LC10 distributions and server packages.

I can confirm that Create Classic for Windows works wonderfully in Bottles (WINE) on Mint 22.2. I did have to add the "All Fonts" dependency, but otherwise it was smooth sailing. I'm able to develop on Linux with a "somewhat native" experience, without having to run a full fledged Windows 10 VM.

I must admit, I'm crossing my fingers that LC will change their minds and keep the Classic version alive for a few more years. That would push me towards renewal.
