So far, 2.9 does the same thing.

I tried the last set of code you wrote (thanks!) and still getting funky characters. The FieldValue shows as a WSTRING

So, the types it shows are:
INTEGER, INTEGER, STRING, WSTRING, INTEGER

I'm afraid that's the end of the road for what I can try - you should file a bug in the quality center and email support to see if they can tickle the team into resolving the issue with you.
