I was thinking more of a custom sort function but I hadn't worked through it in my head. Custom sort functions can do just about anything.

And you are the best at those.

But the issue is not the sorting, it is the compartmentalization between the set of sorted cards with respect to all the others, that might lie on either side or both of the set of interest. But LC can do anything, with a little twiddling.

Do you think the original team thought HC bg's just not needed? Or maybe not important? Or did keeping them interfere with the implementation of the group structure we know?

Maybe they could not think of an additional term for background?

MetaCard combined the feature sets of both HC and SC, and that is the more likely reason. SuperCard's implementation was more flexible.
