No problemo my friend You already know my feelings about 'flat' designs I thought it was a pretty neat solution myself, but I like simple.

I tried using the "Choose pointer tool" but it doesn't work in the standalone ? I get the pointer but when I click an object it doesn't select it.

Sounds like perhaps the object you clicked on has its cantSelect property set. Ever since that added that seldom-needed property to a prominent location in the Project Browser we see many posts in these forums about people confused by having accidentally clicked it, or clicked it thinking it did something other than the highly-specialized thing it does.
