Sure thing that was the case...I hope this post helps others as wellJust a shot in the dark:
Could it be the case you are using a custom plist, which was created by cloning a plist of an older (before 9.6) LC version? If yes, then the custom plist you use contains entries for the old static splash screens, which are not present in LC 9.6, so it is like you are using the old splash screens mechanism but with empty splash screens - this would explain the black borders at the top and bottom in the iPhone X device.
