Hum, I don't use it other than for answering (some) questions, and much like our friend the OP I am not interested in it (although the OP may change their POV, hopefully), and like quite a few others here I've already modified my tools of choice to suit my flow and made my own IDE for my use.

Probably best (and likely easiest) if the documents the teacher is having them follow were made current with updated screenshots.

Actually taking a look in LC 6.7 it seems like the property inspector palette is actually created on the fly (I was going to see if I could just rename it and have it work in LC 9.6)

Well, that *sounds* like a good experiment, feel free to pm me on how that turns out but I likely won't reach 6.7 (on any permanent basis) for a few decades yet

I am with Paul in recommending that you start with v.9x. Just do it.

Depending on what you want to do with LC, you may find yourself hobbled by missing functionality. A single attribute, the ability to use a string of any length as the "itemDelimiter" was what made me upgrade several years ago.

Do you know what an "itemDelimiter" is?

We are here to help, but will stumble constantly trying to backDate our thinking when you ask v.6x questions. The rather larger language in v.9 is, well, larger, but almost all basic functionality is the same. We would be speaking the same language.

@Richmond. Sometimes I use quotes to accentuate a term, to make it stand out. I bet "instructor" meant "mentor", as opposed to "professor of LiveCode" at MIT

You are probably right.

However I would come down like a ton of bricks on some kid who described me as a "teacher".

After all, there is nothing wrong with just writing instructor, especially as that word can take in all sorts
of possibilities.

It is probably good for our brains to have to be constantly adapting; and, frankly, if I get to the point where I am fossilised
from the neck upwards, I hope someone will do the kindness of knocking me on the head.

I am extremely proud of the fact that 2 days before he died (at 86) my father made some really sensible suggestions
about how I might improve the user interface of my Devawriter Pro. He also beat me at chess.

Let's hear it for dad's! My dad is the reason I'm here (in more ways than one), having brought me an Atari 400 with Atari BASIC (instead of the 5200 game console version I was asking for Christmas) and later bringing home a used Mc512KE with HyperCard around 1986 (which I still have), and he never let me win at Checkers (aka Draughts).

I certainly think that the OP, who has no bias in the fire at the moment, will hopefully *start* with the newer IDE since that would make a great deal of the future use of Lc easier for them, and perhaps their "instructor" will update his/her lessons to use images of the new IDE.

That doesn't negate anything else I said, however, and using an older version does not preclude learning the newer one, nor it's features since the basics haven't really changed in over a decade.

As well, IF the OP does feel easier using an older version so things match up, AND their current OS can't run natively, THEN the suggestions I made will certainly give the OP a way forward along that course. <-- stated in true bool fashion, eh >

Very true.

But if the only difference between LiveCode 6 and LiveCode 9.6 is how the wall paper looks a lot
of us have been throwing our money away . . .

My favourite difference is Unicode compatibility.

Having said that, you can do an awful lot with LiveCode 6 (and, come to think of things, you can do an awful lot with
LiveCode 1.1.1 - I know because I did).

Did I say that was the only difference? In this case, it is a difference that can hinder learning, but not one that contributes in any way to understanding how Lc works.
