Employment opportunity!
Dear team,
I recently posted this (see below) and someone took up the challenge.
Unfortunately, they are not able to continue.
I am not nearly experienced enough to take up the offer!
Is there anyone who would like it?
If so, let me know and I will pass on yr details.
With best wishes to you all,
Jessamy.

Hi Jessamy,
How are you? Sorry to be slow in replying to your last message but our crowdfunding campaign has taken up all my time.
However, I now have a proposition to put to you, regarding your aps. We are looking for someone to go in partnership with, someone who is technically able to create an ap, for our data on GM foods in UK supermarkets which is presently held on an Excel spreadsheet.
Basically, we want everyone to have a phone app which just means that they can just swipe the barcode of a food on a supermarket shelf and learn whether or not in contains GM ingredients. We have all the information, but we don't know how to create such an ap.
Would you be interested in being our partner in this enterprise? Or if not, can you direct us to someone who might?
Please would you reply to me at john@thetherapybook.com?
With all best wishes,
John Board

Re: Employment opportunity!
Worth looking at apps like http://www.buycott.com/ for ideas.
Re: Employment opportunity!
Hi jessamy99,
Too bad you don't try to tackle this one yourself, would be a great learning experience.
With Monte's barcode reader mergzxing (us $49) your half way home;
http://mergext.com/home/mergzxing/
Then just add an sqlite database to store the excel data in.
All stuff to learn and use over and over.
It doesn't sound like there is a critical time frame for release.
And you get to look like a crazy person in the store testing your app.

I used to be a newbie but then I learned how to spell teh correctly and now I'm a noob!
Re: Employment opportunity!
You aren't halfway home with MergZX, unfortunately. Monte and I have discussed the issues with ZX - it's not his fault, he's wrapping the ZX library, which can be unreliable. While it does kind-of work, it is nowhere near foolproof. I've had a couple of developers discuss wrapping RedLaser, but I'm still waiting for a proposal.

Rats!
Was really hoping...

Re: Employment opportunity!
Try it out and judge for yourself. You should be able to either compile Monte's demo or write one of your own in a few minutes. Then go to the store and see what happens. If you think it's good enough, then it's good enough.
The problem with UPC codes is that there isn't a good way to error check when ZX barfs or has a bad read. For other codes we can embed checksums and error correction, or structure the data so that when we have a bad read we can recover, but for UPC there is no such luck.
As I mentioned, Monte and I have discussed things that would make this better, but the demand has been low enough that I would be funding the improvements, and that hasn't been worth our while, yet. I might fund a redLaser external, but those details are still in the wind.

Dear Simon,
What a compliment!
However your idea of my abilities is slightly off beam!
I think I will let the younger people attempt this app!
Dementia is definitely taking me over, as you might have noticed from my daft requests for help!
Your help has been much appreciated!!
All the best!
