Win XP install problems -- what should be installed?

Post by WayPastInk » Wed Dec 31, 2008 3:03 am

I have traced (I think) my lack of control images (referenced) in standalones to what may be a faulty install of Rev. 3 on my windows XP machine.

My Windows uninstaller won't show the "next" button, etc.

When Rev. 3 is installed, what folders are created in a standard installation? Where should they be located? What should be in them and how do I ensure that correctly updated Rev. stacks are put into these folders?

I want to make sure that my installation is correct and then continue with figuring out why I can't get referrenced control images in my standalones.

Mark,

Are you absolutely sure that those referenced images are copied with your standalone and that your are using relative paths that point to the correct location? If so, how did you test this?

Why do you think that this happens with referenced controls only and not with imported controls? Did you test this with the same pictures?

I can't imagine that your Revolution installation on Windows is different from mine. If Rev installs, it installs correctly, even though you might miss one or two tiny help files once in a while.

Do you have another Windows machine without this problem? Have you tried re-installing Revolution?

Best,

Mark

Hi Mark.

Thank you for replying, this is very frustrating.

I first noticed this problem when making my first stand alone with Rev. 3. After "importing images as control" worked fine in the development environment but produced transparent working buttons in the stand alone. I then tried referenced images, same problem. I tried using the add file dialogue in the stand alone builder to bring the referenced files along and this didn't work.

The only thing that did work was to first import the images into the ImageLibrary directly. THEN, to place them into my project from the Image Library. Even then, the referenced option was the only one that worked.

Other peculiarities include: no "Next" button in the uninstaller for Rev. 3.

I have purged my Rev. files and reinstalled several times. I have even formatted my hard drive and resinstalled Windows XP pro and worked up all the service packs including SP3 from Microsoft.

I have tried installing with all anti-Viral and registry checker software off (McAfee and Registry Mechanic) same bad results.

I have a relatively long history working with previous Rev. versions some on this machine. I worked with Rev. 2.51 for more than a year on this machine without problem producing stand alones.

I am perplexed and feeling as if this is not going to work. I will be trying a new laptop and I bet that it will work but the machine I am having trouble with is my development machine.

Ending the year with hope and a touch of despair.

Thank you

Mark MacKenzie

I also experience the problem of a missing "next" button with the Studio 3.0 uninstaller on either Vista or XP, so I can't use the usual method of uninstalling Rev.

Referenced controls are working ok for me as long as the "Copy referenced files" checkbox is checked in Standalone settings.
If you want me to try out a few test files for you on XP or Vista just PM me, I've got a bit of spare time at this time of year.
In my experience, Rev can be a bit quirky on Windows.

Sovled-- I think -- Bug in Rev. 3

Post by WayPastInk » Fri Jan 02, 2009 3:34 pm

Thanks for the offer Paul. After more hours I decided to remove Rev. 3 manually and then reinstall Rev. 2.9. Guess what, that install worked just fine and I can create stand alones with all my referenced images, etc. just like it is supposed to be.

So this has got to be a bug between Rev. 3 and the hardware on my Win XP box (nVidia motherboard).
