Happy 2015

Post by MonsieurX » Fri Jan 09, 2015 5:05 pm

Hi guys, long time no see :)

Just wanted to say hello to the community... Wish you all a great 2015!!!

I wanted to congratulate the RunRev team on the release of 7.0. Even Reddit noticed! :)

In case you were wondering, im not releasing anything new - i dont develop at home anymore, but im still using RR (v3.5!!! yes, it still works!!!) to create some big stacks to do large scale migrations and interface different enterprise solutions in my daily work. And i was wondering if unicode was better adapted in this new livecode version to see if i should update...

I have some 50-100TBs of data representing hundreds of millions of files to migrate, archive, test, restore and different programs that handle filepaths differently because of unicode characters which is where RR comes in handy except it doesn't handle it so well in my old version. So im back scripting and RR is soooooo much more pleasant than powershell! :D

After an hour of use testing 7.0 i see that the windows theme is degraded compared to what it was in 3.5... The scrollbar buttons are very funny looking - the down arrow icon (that also comes in the pop up menus) is definitely bizarre (see attachment)...

I thought i might have messed up something but when i relaunched LC the look and feel went back to it's installed default - Motif... argh... I compiled for windows and android (after changing back to windows 95 them - the default theme goes to motif). The android version apk files never shows up in the compiled folder and the windows version might be this has the unix (motif) look and feel... Looking quickly, I didnt see how to change that in the compiler options... Im not using any themes in my W2K8R2 machine... Can anyone tell me if this is limited to the community release? I just wanted to test the unicode thing and got distracted by this... Bad habits die hard when testing new version of RR :)

Hmmm looks like it's going to be an interesting year! Anyway im glad to see there's still live in RunRev and rev in LiveCode... Let's push those limits again :)

Hello MonsieurX, good to see you here.

I've seen at least one other report of the Win theme not registering correctly - do you know if this still happens in v7.0.1?

After a bit of fruitless searching, i couldn't find the 7.0.1. Version 7.0.0 is still the version offered when you click on download.

Thanks for the link! I'll test this soon (hopefully tomorrow).

Can you tell me which RR engine version is in it? I remember "vaguely" seeing this issue back in RR2.x...

So i installed 7.0.1 but the scrollbar button arrow stays the same.

Other issues: the installer installs a new version in another path but no shortcut is created for it in the start menu->programs (im running W2K8 R2).
I dont remember if there was a livecode item in program files before but now it's definitely not there. The old shortcut (7.0.0) still works so the user might be fooled into running the update if he doesn't check the version.

Actually, i found it but it's under RunRev - not live code. Lastly, the old version is not removed - so this is not a proper updater... just an installer.

The linux interface is still present (even in the installer). if you switch to the (old) win95 (which is the only working windows looking interface available), and you quit, the linux interface will come back.

Seems like a few old bugs dating RR3.5 are still here too...
Ex: edit a script, paste a new line of code and the compile button doesn't notice the change. If you are used to press EnterKey to update your script, you're going to have to do it all over again as no compilation or save was done.

And everytime i click on the revmenubar menu, i have to reclick (menu drops but disappears after the first click).

Sorry i dont have much time to write bug reports...

Couple more tests... if i click on the scroll down arrow of an empty field, the up arrow is hilited... Seems like a compilation bug... If there is text in the field it works ok.
Scroll bars have the same ugly arrows as the fields (both horizontal and vertical arrows are affected).

Do these problems appear in a new stack created in version 7?There have been two file format changes since 3.5, which was a very long time ago, and the double conversion may not be exactly correct.

X-

Nice to see you back after all this time! Yes, a lot has changed, and is still changing.
I can't comment much on the Windows and 7.x stuff because I left Windows behind quite a while ago and I find the 6.x series much more stable than 7.x. If you need unicode, then you need to stay with 7.x, but I find that it's too buggy for me to work with on a regular basis.

So you might want to download the latest stable 6.7 release and experiment with that as well. As I mentioned, I don't know about the Windows installations these days, but on linux and osx the installers put the different versions side-by-side rather than replacing the originals. That way you can compare results without having to uninstall and reinstall, and the versions nicely stay out of each other's way. And on linux the new installs show up properly in the Programming menu.

The engine, now that it's open source, is changing with each new release. So you might say that the engine version is the release version. It's not like the old days when RR couldn't change the engine, and each release was just IDE modifications. Now relatively little changes in the IDE and the real work in terms of bugfixes and new features is in the engine itself.

...and I just use the downloads page and don't bother with the updaters.

Sorry about not adding anything useful to the discussion, but I really just wanted to say welcome back.
