Windows 8 Tablets

Post by anmldr » Sun Feb 15, 2015 10:27 pm

I purchased an iPad Mini yesterday. While in the store, I saw a cheap Android tablet for $89 and purchased it too for testing apps. Then I saw a Windows 8 tablet for $119. But, I don't know if LC apps can run on this platform. I know that LC can be used for Window 8 desktop apps but I know nothing about the Windows 8 OS used on their tablets. So, will LC apps for Windows work on their tablets? If so, I will go an purchase that tablet too.

It is one of their kickstarter goals that they plan to have released in Livecode 8. So no, Livecode doesn't work with Windows 8 Tablets until they specifically say they do. They will let you know in a couple months.

I have about 7 apps written for windows xp and 7 that are working on my windows 8 tablet. So while the official answer is no, and the LiveCode team not yet support it, if you feel adventurous you might have the same luck as myself.

Since I have never used a Windows 8 tablet, I don't know about installation of apps onto them. Is the tablet linked to the desktop via USB and the tablet seen as an external drive? Then just copy it to the tablet? Is the file (your app) named myApp.exe? The point being is the extension .exe ?

If so, there is little protection in comparison to Apple devices about installation unless you jailbreak the device. Hmm. Good and bad, I guess.

Great to know that it has worked. The tablet only cost $119.

Hi Gang,
We have to be clear here about the word "Tablet".
The Windows Surface is a tablet and can run liveCode .exe.
But there are Windows tablets that have something like Arm 7 processors that the .exe will not run on. (As far as I know).

Looks like Nadella is solving the Windows/ARM issue for us by cancelling that platform and focusing on x86:
