Well, the very first thing I would do to start building an application that resembled some other application that already exists is ask myself what deficiencies the existing application(s) in this category do not address.

Some other questions you might want to ask yourself (in general) might be -
. What problem are you trying to solve?
. What type of user are you trying to attract ?
. What type of environment you want to target (consumer / business)?
. What benefit are you planning to see from all the work you are about to do?
