A while back I successfully made a fool of myself attempting to build a PPC Linux version of LiveCode:

What changes are you seeing in the Haiku OS ecosystem?

I've always thought it was going somewhere, I constantly play with it, but then, I was a big fan of BE/os as well.

As I am "one lucky person" insofar as I have a "free" 32-bit laptop that
is currently surplus to requirements I shall try installing Haiku OS on it next weekend
so that I can see what a 'real' computer (i.e. not some virtualised setup) is like
running the system.

It certainly is mature (one could, if one wanted to be nasty,
argue that it has gone straight from babyhood to senescence without anything in between).

But whether it can offer "all the usual crap" that other desktop systems can provide
(office suite, web browser, and so on) is an interesting question . . .

. . . certainly looks better than ReactOS [I mean . . . why the shoogly-woogly would
you spend years and years attempting to make a Windows clone when Windows
is already 'there'?].

As far as React goes, and the why and what for, that would be something better asked of the dev. Of course, your question could be turned inward as well, why bother writing a program to do xyz, when there are existing solutions? Everyone's reasons are different.

So: I installed Haiku OS 32-bit (for BeOS compatibility) on a 2006 iMac
and it runs fine EXCEPT that I have to BOOT the thing from the install DVD each time,
which is very tedious.

Huh, that is very wierd. Any errors when the DVD isn't inserted? Something like 'no os' or 'no bootable disk' etc?

Just a grey folder icon with a question mark that flashes on and off.

Heh, well, I don't have Mac hardware to test on, so save the thanks till we see if I can reproduce or fix the issue.

Your mac is uefi?

Also, as best you can remember, the steps you took during the install, for instance, did you use a DVD or USB? When reaching the installer screen, did you choose install or live? etc.

Also did you have a partition prepared or no? Are there other os'es on the machine or is it haiku solo? Anything else you can think of.
