Library repository & community resources

Post by konung » Tue Apr 14, 2020 10:26 pm

Hi All.

I just saw this video from the LiveCode team, and it was really great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCc8fk-7Qjk
It spurred some questions about learning resources & community in general, that I hope you can help me answer?

Forgive me, if I'm asking something obvious.
  1. I hope there are more video sessions into more advanced topics. If there are more on youtube, could you point me to the right place?
  2. Are there tutorial, videos, etch where LiveCode app needs to talk to external APIs? For example, REST APIs, JSON, OAuth & oauth2 authentication, GraphQL - all of these would be very helpful. For example, right now, as a learning project, I'm trying to build an app, that would talk to a sample Shopify store / REST API / GraphQL API.
  3. One thing that's missing for me from LiveCode Community is an easy-to-find repository of great LiveCode libraries. If there is one, could you point me to it, please? For example, many languages (Elm, Elixir, Crystal, Ruby) have either a library search site like this https://crystalshards.xyz/ ( Shards - libraries for crystal-lang) or at least a GitHub page similar to this: https://github.com/markets/awesome-ruby ( for Ruby) . This is a really popular way to share lists of libraries: https://github.com/sindresorhus/awesome
  4. It's hard to search for anything related to LiveCode on Github, StackOverflow or even google. Many things that come up are either for LiveScript ( which is a compiled language for JavaScript) or related to pair-programming / video tutorials for other languages ( as in live coding). Is there a better term to use when searching? Or could we, as a community, introduce one? This may be a sensitive subject, considering that LiveCode team switched from RunRev name, but any suggestion on locating resources would be greatly appreciated.

Just to note: I did purchase Indy license and the books, and planning on going through them in the next month or two, while sequestered at home. But coming from a variety of OSS languages and platforms, just looking for video tutorials & online docs - those seem to work better for me.

Thank you

p.s.: I have a lot of back-end programming experience in Ruby, JS, Crystal & Elixir, I've dabbled in Livecode a few years ago but I've been postponing my deep dive into LiveCode, for a while due to lack of time

p.p.s. I really like the cross-platform aspect of LiveCode for mobile and desktop apps, but I want to use LiveCode mobile apps to talk to various internal backend platforms that I built in Ruby, Crystal & Elixir, hence my interest in those specific topics

Hi.

Welcome to LC and the forum. Others will answer your points above.

When you get ready to build stuff, start asking about everything right here. There is a prize for the most questions asked.

Instead of forgiving you, I actually want to thank you as I had no idea that even existed :)

All I can say Elanor is "A star is born..." and, as a little gentle ribbing, "Mice up" ? hee hee :P

I watched it to the end, it was FASCINATING. I give it "Two pitchforks up!" ImageImage

There are a lot of videos about many of the topics you mention, and more, that were recorded during various LC conferences over the years. These are paid content though, available for users who attended the conferences either personally or remotely.

I wonder if you could convince LC to post a list of the available videos and, ideally, allow purchases of selected ones rather than the entire 2-3 day conference packages. It might be worth an inquiry to see if they'd be interested in setting that up.

Thank you for tracking that down, Linda. I must say, quite generous on behalf of the mothership!
