revOnline corrupted . . .

Post by richmond62 »

Yup: hacked and so forth.

Logging in from LC 8 I get this:
-
SShot 2021-11-13 at 20.46.58.png
-
which is hilarious as that website closed about 10 years ago.

Funnily enough (my memory must be failing), but I wondered what
"revOnline" and "RunRev" meant, and what connexion they had with LiveCode. 8)

It might be time to give the "back toilet" a good scrub round.

Had you updated your profile since that was written? Or are you saying you never wrote that profile?

I wrote that profile.

However, it might have behooved LiveCode to see if links were still active.

Did you fix it while you were there?

No, I did not bother for the very simple reason I no longer have a website, and did not think that a Facebook page would work.

So others should fix problems you created and don't feel are worth your own time to fix, even when you're looking right at it, but you'll take the time to create a thread in the product forum with a misleading title to blame them for your choices?

I don't understand you, Richmond, but I appreciate your clarifying your priorities.

I was informed, elsewhere, that the revonline site had been hacked, and was identified as such.

The fact that my listed website is a load of "old toadstools" is another thing.

Did you consider checking the claim out for yourself?

The only evidence provided was a poorly formatted page which no one else has been able to reproduce in Firefox, Chrome, and at least one other browser. Looks like the CSS just didn't load on that one user's system.

No evidence of a "hack" was provided, just speculation.

Some say JFK Jr is a zombie that still walks among us. Others say the world is run by lizard people from outer space.

People write lots of things on the Internet.

None of them matter until folks start spreading them without checking them out first.

You do not have to understand me, but I would be grateful if you understood that my "top, dead centre" priority is
to propagate LiveCode as a teaching medium.

You are correct, and I am guilty of jumping too soon.

Certainly, BRAVE, on MacOS 12.1 did not object in any way.

BUT, I still think that, considering when LiveCode changed its name calling revOnline "revOnline" seems a bit odd.

If there's a useful takeaway from this thread it may be this:

Any time any of us sees what looks like a potential security risk for any vendor, the best course of action is to report it to the vendor quickly and discretely.

Publishing potential vulnerability info publicly without first giving the vendor reasonable time to respond to the issue is a choice that may exacerbate the vulnerability.

This is the cardinal rule with any vendor.

Thankfully in this case there's no evidence of an exploit and I've reported the issue that led to the concern to the vendor.
