LiveCode Global Feature Focus – the new IDE

Post by richmond62 » Sat Jun 11, 2022 9:42 am

https://livecode.com/m1-native-latest-l ... -releases/

presumably, to access the Developer Preview WITH the proposed new IDE one has to
pay $99 to access ALL the conference videos and ancillary stacks.

It, also, seems that one cannot pay that money from a PayPal account.

LiveCode claims it wants user feedback.

Would it be possible for LiveCode to release a screen shot of the new IDE so that
people who do not have $99, or cannot spare that, to get some sense of what the
IDE might look like.

I am sure that will generate quite a lot of feedback, some of which may prove useful.

Having looked at the (very) pre-release build, I can easily say you're not missing much yet.
Obviously I don't have the authority to post either a screenshot or anything else of the build, but I can say this:

It's OSX-only at this point and a very early proof of concept. I don't find it that different from the current IDE except for things like
1. the backdrop only affects the IDE window, not the whole screen
2. the text is very large
3. I'm glad I don't have to use a single 13-inch laptop screen to develop with

Thanks.

Your reply has answered one question that had been worrying me for a while:
1. the backdrop only affects the IDE window, not the whole screen
So the new IDE should be windowed rather than taking over the whole screen.

Wonder why this:

leads nowhere.

At the conference I asked if I could post images of the IDE and Kevin said yes, so here are a few. These are not the full extent of the options available; in fact, you can arrange the panes in nearly any order to show different parts of the IDE at any one time, or hide panes that you don't need, or simply show the entire window as a single pane. Panes are dock/undockable so you can separate them as separate windows (like we have now.) The main window is resizeable and panes adjust propotionately.

This is very much unfinished and undoubtedly will change. There are lots of bugs still. The UI is confusing, not only because it is unfamiliar but also because icons need tooltips. Other stuff needs fixing too but bear in mind this is just a semi-working prototype so you can see where it's headed.

Last two screenshots. For myself, I'd probably undock the script editor and the message box, and unless I was doing layout, hide the tools.

On Monterey, the backdrop appears as a separate window behind the main IDE window on my Mac. The text size is also normal for me. However, there are some serious issues with stack display and redraws. It really is just a proof of concept at this point. I've sent in feedback, but I'm not sure if they want bugs/issues or just feedback on the overall design.

I do like the general idea and the modern appearance but I'm having trouble learning my way around.

Text size - I was referring to the toolbar and the menubar thing.
And I see I stand corrected about the backdrop - I was assuming that the gray canvas was the backdrop. I'm not sure what use the backdrop is in that case.

I wasn't sure about the backdrop either until I assigned decorations to my stack and it popped out into its own window. I could drag it out of the main window after that. I can imagine having multiple stacks where you might want a backdrop.

Thank you very much indeed.

This is important for me to consider how I am going to teach xTalk programming after the release of LC 10.

It is also interesting that one can 'uncouple' stacks: I wonder if that would be remembered for new LC sessions?

Just in the process of sorting out my PCs running Xubuntu connected to

1024 x 768 monitors
-
line.jpg
-

[Various reasons for these:

1. Relatively cramped space in "lab".

2. Waiting for 'my man' to get 6-10 1344 x 1008 that are all the same.

3. Wondering how I would accommodate monitors like that. ]

And realising that a single-window IDE will not 'DO' with these,

and, even with my 1344 x 1008 laptop I wonder . . .

Apps with dockable windows are common enough that users expect session state to be restored with each launch, so commonly that not doing so would be flagged as a bug.

I am "not convinced" about those vast icons in the tools.

Presumably SVG images.

You can resize those.
