Connecting AI to Livecode

Post by bamakojeff »

For any of you using AI with Livecode, I'm curious how you are connecting your AI to your code? Livecode's binary stacks are proprietary, so Claude (the AI I'm using) can't read them. So when I use Claude to help me with a programming task, it writes code to a text file which I copy into the stack in the appropriate script. But it's quite the manual process.

Has anyone got a better workflow? Has anyone taught Claude any "skills" that help it work with Livecode stacks? I'm thinking of working on some sort of "connector" between Claude and Livecode that would remove as much of the copy and paste as possible. But if anyone already has some clever solutions, I'd love NOT to reinvent the wheel. :-)

TIA,
Jeff

I’ve not tried it with AI, but ScriotTracker seems to do what you need. It keeps the scripts of a stack exported as text files. It was built to allow editing of the scripts in an external editor and tracking changes in a VCS (like GitHub), but I would think it would also be helpful in your situation.

I built an MCP bridge that lets Claude work directly in the IDE. It's a plugin for LiveCode Community 9 and related forks. I haven't tried it on the newer commercial versions, so no promises there.

Once it's connected, Claude can see your open stacks, read and edit scripts one handler at a time, check that a script compiles, create stacks, cards and controls, and look at a card to see what it built. It asks you before it runs any code or saves a stack.

To set it up:
1. Download the extension below and install it with Tools > Extension Manager.
2. Choose Development > Plugins > xTalk MCP Bridge, press Turn On, and follow the setup window to connect the Claude desktop app or Claude Code.

It uses your regular Claude subscription, so you don't need an API key. It's still early, so I'd love to hear how it goes if you try it.

Thanks so much for posting this MCPBridge. What you describe is basically exactly what I'm looking for.

When I try to install this on LC 11 Create Classic, however, I get the error: "extension missing from widget/org.openxtalk.plugin.mcpbridge.0.2.7-rc.6"

Is this the repository you are working from: https://github.com/SethMorrowSoftware/OpenXTalk-Beyond

Thanks again for posting this.

Thanks, Brian, for the link to Script Tracker. I pointed Claude to your link, and "he" thinks it could be adapted for my requirements.

I'll report back on what happens. :-)

Hi Jeff, could you kindly remove the link to that repo, it is a "competing" project and I believe discussion is not allowed. However, you should be able to install this without the extension manager at all.

1.
Copy the .lce, rename the copy to mcpbridge.zip, and unzip it into a folder you'll keep (say Documents/mcpbridge). Keep the folder together: the mcp and xtalkassistant folders inside it are needed.
2.
In the Message Box (the multi-line pane), with your own path in the first line:

Code: Select all

put "/Users/you/Documents/mcpbridge/mcpbridge.livecodescript" into tFile
start using stack tFile
send "extensionInitialize" to stack "org.openxtalk.plugin.mcpbridge"
send "mcpBridgeMenuPick" to stack "org.openxtalk.plugin.mcpbridge"
3.
The last line opens the bridge's window. Turn it on and use Claude Setup from there. Claude runs the bridge's server with Node, so you'll need Node installed.
The first run also puts an "xTalk MCP Bridge" item in Development > Plugins. Since LC 11 isn't loading it as an extension, you have to run those lines again after each restart before that menu item works. I haven't tried this on LC 11 myself, so let me know how it goes.
