What level of licence do I need?

Post by shalinor » Fri Jan 21, 2011 1:54 am

I've had a quick search, but couldn't find the answer to this question.

I expect it will be the obvious answer, but here are two hypotheticals with the answers I expect:

A hobyist wants to create a clone of the smash hit, sheep herder, and offer it on the Apple iStore for free...
Personal iOS licence?

said hobyist wants to charge $1.00 for the game...
Commercial licence with additional iOS add on?

While i realise the obvious answers are those above  , it seems difficult for a hobbyist (at least for me) to come up with the money for a commercial licence just to sell a simple little game, that will probably be lucky to turn over $100...

and I appologise in advance for my spelling :?

Hi Shalinor,

I could take this from two different angles. The practical way: if Apple accepts your app, then you can publish it. There will be a splash window mentioning RunRev Ltd. and the license being personal, but if that's no problem for Apple, then you could try.

The legal way: if I remember correctly, the license says you can't distribute your software commercially. Even though you don't ask money for it, distributing software through the iTunes store is a commercial activity. It is really doubtful that such restrictions hold in court, but I wouldn't want to be in a position that forces me to prove that these doubts are justified.

If your game is really simple, try a free open source development platform for iPhone. It should let you publish your software commercially, but you don't need to pay big money for it. Don't forget that your Apple developer account will also cost money.

Kind regards,

Mark

Thanks Mark,

That's the sort of clarification I needed.

I know about the apple costs and it wasn't too huge a stretch to scrimp together $200 for an app and the developer fee, but to find over half a thousand dollars is just too much for someone that doesn't even know if there silly little idea will even sell a dozen copies...

Not to worry, surley lotto will pay out one of these days (if only I bought tickets  ).

Cheers,
Shalinor

Just a small clarification here: You are permitted to submit free applications to the App store using a Personal license. You only need to buy the Commercial LiveCode license if you are charging for the App. A full description of our licensing and which license is good for what purpose can be found here:

http://runrev.com/products/livecode/lic ... -overview/

I hope this helps,

Thanks, Heather. I couldn' infer this from the license conditions. I'm glad to know that RunRev is more flexible than I thought.
