A book out there?

I believe there's at least one book being written, but in the meantime the 378-page manual is a good start. After you finish that and the Dictionary you'll have a good foundation that may obviate the need for another book.

I have offered this before as a possible start. I am not sure how many people agree.

If you are a true newbie, the best books to start might well be about Hypercard. LiveCode is a wonderful, powerful superset of that program, but retains virtually all of its essential characteristics. Many people here started that way; their LC learning curve was reduced to almost nothing because of it.

If this seems of interest to you, there are two books I would recommend, both of which are still obtainable. Let me know...

First is "The complete Hypercard 2.2 Handbook" by Danny Goodman

Second is "Hypercard 2.2, the Book", by Winkler, Kamins and DeVoto.

Goodman is probably more useful. Once you have read what you want in it ( I assume you will not be experimenting with HC itself), you can probably start making simple gadgets with LC, having a good mental foundation in place.

For those who may not know, the "DeVoto" there is Jeanne DeVoto, who wrote much of the LiveCode dictionary and chunks of other parts of the LiveCode docs.

As you can see Im a totally newbie, so this language is the "father" of LiveCode? 80% of the functions on that is on live code?

More properly, 90% of the fundamental structure is on there.

The LC language is much larger and more powerful than HC. The IDE is more powerful and modern.

But if you know HC, you essentially know LC. A "Goodman" for LC, is the one you were wishing for. By reading it, you will quickly get how the whole thing works, and will easily be able to make LC programs based on HC principles.

To my mind, most of the dictionary and tutorials go into far too much depth too quickly. As a former Visual Basic programmer (admittedly a long time ago!), I find HyperTalk a mystery! Probably my problem, but I'm convinced I effectively need to unlearn VB before I can start making any headway with a solid foundation in RunRev.
I, for one, will be checking out the recommendations.

The other book is Programming LiveCode for Real Beginners, by me, and is aimed at desktop development due to its nature. The two books together should be all you need to really understand LiveCode (but i can imagine there's room for more books ).

I think that my book is useful for anyone who wants to start programming with LiveCode, be it for mobile or desktop devices. It lays a good foundation. At least, I wrote it with this intention. Once you get the basics right, you can read Colin's book to learn about the specifics of mobile development.

I am in the process of uploading the actual code for their games. They have come out with more sophisticated ones recently.

Some of them are now into writing multiplayer games on one computer, multi-computer games (client/servers), word processors and numerous other interesting projects. I will be posting much more once we get through exams.
