Do you reset the free trial on every bugfix release of your products? I'm sure existing customers could request trials if they need them. Hopefully trials will be a thing of the past in a few weeks anyway.

Monte,

I requested a trial a year ago and Heather refused. I don't know if I get one if I ask again, but I don't feel like asking. It is a pity, because RunRev loses money this way. Several people told me they won't buy without having an opportunity to test a trial version.

Even if the open-source project succeeds, I'd want to test the commercial version before purchase. Commercial versions tend to differ from open-source versions and we already know that password protection won't be available in the open-source version.

With regard to my own products, I don't set any limits on trial versions. People can download the software and try it for as long as they like. A few products of mine are even free if you accept a few minor inconveniences or limitations. That way, I make my software available to people who can't afford a license.

Real Studio provides a 30 day trial copy whenever you need one. There's no need to create an account. I can download and try the new version whenever I like without going through all the fuss of creating accounts and searching for a download.

Kind regards,

Mark

RR used to have an open policy where they didn't count the number of trials a user downloaded, but they found some people were abusing it. Since the trial is fully functional, people were just re-downloading repeatedly and using the software for free without ever purchasing. Eventually they had to start limiting the number of downloads per individual because of that, because that did cost them money. Hopefully if the Kickstarter succeeds, they won't need a trial version any more. Except for the password encryption the code base will be identical. There will be ways to check on that, but I have no reason to doubt it.

The people who've told you they wouldn't buy without seeing a trial version can easily get one. RR will give an extension sometimes too if the person asks for more time. They understand that people don't always have enough time to fully test because they are still learning the language or the IDE.

@Mark
Everybody has a different experience, psychology and business model. You can't push your model on others.
I think that the open source move is a very bold one for RR and if it succeeds it will impact a lot of people.
Of course, professional developers earning money from their coding will also be impacted.
As for other open source systems, the model of professionals may have to shift towards expertise, training, more complex apps... whatever.
If you are frustrated with RR business model, trial versions, pricing strangeness, it is okay. In the meantime, have pleasure developing with LC and give pleasure to others !
If programming is not about pleasure, then programming is not human.
Georges

Hi Georges,

I'm not pushing anything. Just stating that currently it is impossible to get a trial version.

Kind regards,

When I ran LiveCode 5.53 after versions 5.54 & 6beta became available & I was given the option to download
Version 5.54 but Version 6beta required me to pay another $199 on top of the $24.99 I pay for being an ios & windows developer.
Why would I have to pay another ~$200. The answer I got was I just have an ios license; I guess Heather DIDNT SEE I added the Mac license for $5 more.
But my real QUESTION is why has Runrev made updates UNAVAILABLE(w/o extra cost) to those who only need or want IOS or MAC or WINDOWS or LINUX or ANDROID or any COMBINATION of the ADDON
LICENSES? WHY ISN'T $19.99/mo, the cost of one platform license/mo., which adds up to almost $240/year enough to entitle the single platform DEVELOPER free beta updates; since they get the update when it is FINAL, as a paying MONTHLY DEVELOPER? If making BETAs AVAILABLE benefits RUNREV as much or more than a DEVELOPER why would RUNREV NOT provide the BETAs to monthly RENTAL CUSTOMERS?

Perhaps WE RENTAL DEVELOPERS(or HOBBYISTS) would HELP in a way other DEVELOPERS don't since we are the POOR in some cases & HOBBYISTS who are not PLAGUED with the PRESSURES of having to meet a DEADLINE, thus IDEAS flow more FREELY in a BRAIN not under PRESSURE, thus HELPING make the NEXT LIVECODE version EVEN BETTER.
Just Wondering! REA

Rea,

Beta versions are only available to those who pay for the developer programme. Because I believe I should be paid raid than pay for beta testing, I just wait until the new official version is available and then I test it to see if I like it. If I like it, I buy it and if I don't like it I don't.

Kind regards,

I made it clear it is available for $200 more, this is not the answer to the question posed. There is no doubt it can be bought for the right price. REA

Hi Rea,
I have access to the beta's but I find them to add more problems then solutions to my projects. Simple things crop up like suddenly .png is not supported as an image file type or routines that were working fail. While the new features they are implementing may work, beta's are for testers and I don't work for RunRev. But maybe you are into that sort of thing? Have you asked support if you can be a beta tester? Which is very different than asking for access to beta releases.

If it's just the new features you are after in a beta I'm not sure they would be any good for releasing your software under as they have no support while they are in beta form.

Simon
EDIT: I should point out that anything they break during the beta process is always fixed in the final release.
I used to be a newbie but then I learned how to spell teh correctly and now I'm a noob!

Thanks for sharing; I appreciate & like your points. I was hoping RUNREV would address my post & offer to make me a beta tester or at least consider my REQUEST; MAYBE I WAS EXPECTING MORE CONCERN THAN EXISTS. I enjoy that sort of thing & find I often learn more when I run into problems. I agree Betas are a headache at times but they also give the user a chance to make recommendations when something is amiss for beta reasons or just amiss because it is
Intermittent when 2 or 3 things aren't right for whatever reasons. I enjoy the challenge & feel the beta releases to Developers has more going for the new FEATURES than against them. Thanks for sharing. REA
