making application icons

Post by chris25 » Sat Nov 09, 2013 8:10 pm

the specifications for making application icons for windows mac and android phone are a little overwhelming seeing that some documents are dated 2005 to 2009, I am not too sure what the specs are for 2013. I have iconagrapher, also looked at ing2icnsapp, but I thought why bother with this when I have photoshop, I know that I must create each icon as a separate entity and not make one and then scale it, I read that tutorial, but I really could not find out what specifications are needed that are particular to a mac, windows and android. what are the rules? if there is a tutorial I have missed please point me.

kind regards
chris

Well having typed in a different search pattern in google I found this:http://www.visualpharm.com/articles/icon_sizes.html
so posting it in case anybody else happens to be interested.

Hi Chris,

For Windows, I often use IcoFX. A great app that gives you lots of control over the icon format. It also creates icons for Mac, but it only works on Windows. This app used to be free but now costs 30 or 50 USD depending on the type of license you want.

Apple includes an icon utility called Icon Composer with XCode. It is a great, simple utility. Just drag a picture into the squares in the window and choose Save As... from the File menu.

For iPhone and Android, you can create icons with any good graphics editor, including Photoshop. There are tutorials on the 'net that show how to do this.

I have tried Iconographer, but the results always were completely useless. However, if you like Iconographer then you're lucky, as it is now free.

(It is still possible to download CS2 for free, but you need to be logged in with your Adobe ID).

Kind regards,

Mark

Hallo Mark. According to here: http://mac.appstorm.net/reviews/graphic ... ert-icons/ Icon composer is apparently no longer included with developer tools. But anyway I can't have xcode beyond 3.3 anyway. So anything I do will be for mac windows and android (one day). Photoshop can not handle .icns files so I will simply drop pngs or jpegs from CS3 into a drop box in a free utility that I have. The above website I think gives me all the requirements.

Thankyou for your reply.
Chris
