Getting Started video blank on Mac (just audio)

Post by billworld » Sat Oct 25, 2008 12:40 am

Okay. Just downloaded Revolution Studio on my Mac, went to Getting Started, clicked the Getting Started video which takes me to my browser and begins playing the audio but no video. What component, etc. is missing in my QuickTime install. I thought I read somewhere that Revolution auto-installed some required video components.

Please help.

Hi billworld,

look for the ensharpen codec, that is the component Rev uses to encode their videos. It usually is installed when Rev installs. I think Rev asks whether to install it or not. You should find in your program folder a Revolution Studio folder inside that there is a 'third party' folder which contains the ensharpen installer in the 'TechSmiths EnSharpen Codec' folder. it ist a pkg which should start installating the codec on double-click.

Yeah I found a reference to this in the docs so I looked for this and ran its installer and still no go.

Sometimes it takes a restart before QuickTime finds the codec.

Anyone out there able to run the Getting Started videos under Mac OS X 10.5.5 (with all software updates applied AND the required codec installed)?

This is a bit disconcerting as my first experience with RunRev has some bumps...

Hi Billworld,

sorry to hear that. I run on MacOS X 10.5.5 on an Intel-Mac, all up to date
No Problem to get to the getting started video from Rev 3.0

First make shure that you have the ensharpen codec installed. it is in

YourHardDisk:Library:QuickTime:TSCC.component

so look for the 'TSCC.component', that is the ensharpen codec.

If the installation is ok you should find a folder and a file:

YourHardDisk:Applications:TechSmith EnSharpen:EnSharpen Readme.txt

(that's where I got my info about where the codec is and what it is called from)

if you dont find it, something went wrong with the installation.
If it is there and it doesnt work, then it just might conflict with another codec. (remote possibility)

Once it is there then try to go to this url in e.g. Safari, that is where the getting started movie resides.

http://support.runrev.com/tutorials/vid ... cation.mov

Since I never had problems once the codec was installed, it is hard to guess what is going on. One rarely reads of problems with this, occasionally people didnt install the codec, but that is about it. So something in your configuration is probably at odd with this.

the movies are definitely a help to get started, so it would be nice if you could get to them.

I hope this is of some help

Thanks for chiming in. Super weird. I'm running the latest version of QuickTime Pro (which I purchased). I've removed from /Library/Quicktime/ all 3rd party components and just have the following:

AppleIntermediateCodec.component
AppleMPEG2Codec.component
TSCC.component

and it still doesn't work after rebooting, even after removing Quicktime preferences.

All the TSCC stuff is all located in the correct places.

Funny thing is that if I drag the QT window while the movie is playing, I see a shadow image of the graphic content. I'd attach a screen shot of what I'm talking about, but, it doesn't appear the images can be uploaded to this forum?

Any clue where else to look on my system for possible incompatibility or whatever?

Thanks

Bill (still Getting Started...)

Hi Bill,

that is what I got also:

Quicktime Pro (purchased) plus

AppleIntermediateCodec.component
AppleMPEG2Codec.component
TSCC.component

additionally I have some more codecs, I dont list them, because it works on my machine.

So except to tell you that I have the same setup as yours I am not much of a help here, you even deleted the preferences, I have no idea why it wouldnt work, may be someone has a better idea.
sorry for that
Bernd

Bill,

sometimes when I don't know if the problem is in the software or my system configuration/user account I log in as another user and see if the problem perists. In your case I would create a new user with admin priviliges, just to be shure, and start in this user account Safari and the tutorial URL at runrev.com. If that works you narrowed the problem down to your account.
Basically the new user account should only be used for troubleshooting, since this gives you a pretty clean account. You can take the admin priviledges away later if you feel uncomfortable with 2 admin accounts.

I thought the same thing and gave this a try as well and still no go. Anyway, I'm just going through the PDFs.

Hi Bill,

I have just tried the video on three different computers (PC, PowerMac, Intel Mac, Mac OS X 10.4.11 and 10.5.5) and encounter no problems whatsoever.

Are you sure you have removed *all* QuickTime extensions that are not standard? Also those in the user library, the system library and the root library? (Yes, there are 3 library folders).

Have you tried re-installing QuickTime and the TechSmith codec?

You could ask support about this issue.

Best,

Mark

Hi Mark:

I don't see a Quicktime folder in the Library folder within the user folder. Here's what I got in the root and system folders. I believe all the system/library/quicktime components are defaults, although I'm not sure. Haven't yet re-installed everything.

root/library/Quicktime/
------------------------------------
AppleIntermediateCodec.component
AppleMPEG2Codec.component
TSCC.component

system/library/Quicktime/
------------------------------------
AppleProResDecoder.component
QuickTimeComponents.component
QuickTimeIIDCDigitizer.component
QuickTimeVR.component
QuickTimeFireWireDV.component
QuickTimeH264.component
QuickTimeImporters.component
QuickTime3GPP.component
QuickTimeMPEG4.component
QuickTimeMPEG.component
QuickTimeStreaming.component
QuickTimeUSBVDCDigitizer.component
QuartzComposer.component
ApplePixletVideo.component

I notice with 10.5.4 and later some installers by apple switch off some of the MIME settings.

You may want to check in the System Preferences/QuickTime/Advanced/

first check legacy encoders if uncheck.

then there a button at the bottom of the window labeled "MIME Settings". Go there and make sure everything you want quicktime to use is checked marked.

Maybe this will help.

Good Luck.
