Download LC community vs commercial : beware speed

Post by bangkok » Mon Oct 27, 2014 5:53 am

After the announcement of LC 7, i've downloaded both Commercial version and Community version, this morning, from Thailand, with a reglular ADSL line.

The first... was fast. 20 minutes.

But the second... took more than 2 hour and half !

I guess RunRev gives the bandwith to licence owners. No problem with that. But such painfully long time for Community version could compromise the diffusion of LC.

Does RunRev have a policy of official "mirror servers" (in Asia, Europe etc.) for Community version ?

Hi,

I have downloaded the community version quite often. It never took more than a few minutes. I'm pretty sure, something was wrong with your connection. RunRev doesn't have different download policies for different groups of people.

Kind regards,

How many times did you run that test to arrive at that conclusion?

Internet latency is affected by a great many factors, ranging from traffic on their server at a given moment to load on the many switches between their server and us, and others. RunRev doesn't intentionally inhibit download speed of any version.

If you hold the mouse over each link you'll see the URLs for both Community and Commercial are on the same server, in the same folder.

As the popularity of LiveCode grows they may need to consider regional mirrors, but at this time there appears to be only a single download server for the files on the Downloads page.

Actually, one URL may point to different physical servers behind the scenes. So, Bangkok's conclusion isn't too far-fetched, even though I personally don't think it is correct.

Technically that's true, through load balancing, httpd_config, mod_rewrite, and other means RunRev could conceivably be doing almost anything we might imagine to conceal the true URL of the files on their servers.

But in all fairness, we have little indication that's the case.

No one else in this thread has been able to reproduce the issue, and we're each in very different time zones.

Moreover, we don't even know the number of times the OP ran his test to see if this is even consistent for him.

Given the range of things that commonly affect Internet latency, and the absence of any consistent data to the contrary, I'd go with Occam's Razor on this, at least until we find any reason to suggest otherwise.

Bangkok, you simply got a bad break this morning.

Everybody is allowed to download both, the commercial version and the community version. How should the server decide who is a licence owner?

p.s. The fastest downloads I ever had were all with the versions for the Raspberry Pi (=community only), downloaded to a Raspberry Pi in at most three minutes ...

My mistake. This morning, download is very fast.

I took the Commercial version from within the "account" space, I dind't see that actually it was possible to download it directly from the website.
