I've never seen a good use come out of them, the best I've seen is a neutral use, such as automated response systems (customer support related usually, though there have been some pretty fair chatbots that can fool people).
Old game systems, where the play was all text based, was the last actual "good" use for this sort of thing, so I guess maybe there is some good in anything.
